A Reiki Retreat in Japan:

In May 2023, I gifted myself something truly special for my birthday, a Reiki retreat in Japan. It was a journey not just across the world, but deep into my own healing practice.

The retreat took place in a traditional Japanese house, nestled near the sacred Mt. Kurama, the birthplace of Reiki. This mountain, located just outside Kyoto is where Mikao Usui first discovered Reiki after days of meditation. Our hike to Osugi Gongen, the site where Usui received the download, was absolutely breathtaking. I was captivated by the lush nature, the serene silence of the forest, and the elegant beauty of Japanese art we passed along the way.

When we finally reached the site, we discovered that the shrine had been destroyed by a natural disaster, a massive tree had fallen on it. Yet, despite the physical absence of the shrine, the energy was still very much alive. A profound sense of peace and healing surrounded us. It was as if the spirit of the place refused to be diminished.

Right there, at the spot where Mikao Usui meditated, I received a Reiki attunement. It was powerful and deeply moving. I spent the rest of the day exploring, meditating, and simply being present in that sacred space.

Another milestone during the retreat was giving and receiving in-person Reiki for the first time. Until then, my experience had only been online. Two practitioners worked on me simultaneously, and I could feel a surge of energy flowing through my entire body. It was incredibly healing and affirming.

Outside of Mt. Kurama, I also immersed myself in the beauty and culture of Kyoto. This enchanting city is steeped in history and spirituality. I visited places like Kenninji, the oldest Zen temple in Gion, as well as Yasaka Shrine, Fushimi Inari-Taisha, Kiyomizudera, and Toji Temple. Each site had its own unique atmosphere and presence. Hiking through these ancient, scenic places was both fun and spiritually enriching.

This retreat was more than just a trip. It was a journey into the heart of Reiki, a reconnection with nature, and a celebration of life. One I’ll never forget.
